Sound as a Bridge Between Cultures
Marios Joannou Elia Inspires Young Audiences at the China Welfare Institute Children’s Palace
On Monday, December 30, 2024, a special cultural exchange event took place at the China Welfare Institute Children’s Palace in Shanghai, celebrating artistic dialogue between Chinese tradition and international creativity. The event gathered young talents, educators, and cultural representatives, highlighting the role of sound and music as universal languages of understanding.
The event formed part of the broader vision of «Sound of Shanghai – Opera of a Cosmopolis», a project by Marios Joannou Elia that serves as a bridge between cultures, connecting China and the world through the art of sound.
Elia was invited as guest speaker to introduce the concept and artistic vision of the project, focusing on how the essence of sound and music resonates in the imagination and creativity of young people. Addressing an audience of talented Chinese children and youth, he inspired them to discover the expressive power of listening and the emotional depth hidden within sound.
To engage the audience interactively, Elia presented a series of authentic sound recordings from Shanghai, inviting the children to guess and identify the city’s distinctive soundscapes — transforming the presentation into a playful journey through the city’s auditory identity.
The event, hosted in one of Shanghai’s most emblematic educational institutions, reflected the Palace’s long-standing commitment to cultural education and international exchange. It underlined how music transcends borders, connecting people, generations, and traditions through creativity, empathy, and imagination.
